It looks as if Japanese scientists are racing to beat US scientists to construct the first “Space Elevator”. As the name implies this will be able to transport cargo to space using much less energy than current rocket technology..
A space elevator would open civilian space travel, and would allow vast amounts of cargo to be transported in space, paving the way for large space stations or moon bases.
Let’s just hope this doesn’t also pave the way for a space junk yard as people look to dispose of nuclear or other non-biodegradable items.
